The word Holography referes to the science of producing holograms. Holography refers to an advanced form of photography that allows an image to be recorded in three dimensions.

Holography was invented in 1947 by Hungarian physicist Dennis Gabor (1900–1979), work for which he received the Nobel Prize in physics in 1971.

The first holograms that recorded 3D objects were made by Emmett Leith and Juris Upatnieks in Michigan, USA in 1963 and Yuri Denisyuk in the Soviet Union.

For the 2nd consecutive year, HoMAI gave its Awards for Excellence in Holography - 2003′ at the recently held AGM. These awards are given to recognize the Indian Holography Industry’s innovations in holographic Security & Authentication, Promotion, Origination, Product/or conversion, New Application and Packaging.

There was only one award and one commendation plaque in each category. However, there were many other entries which received appreciation for their innovative technology and application.

Holoflex Limited, Kolkata won three awards and one commendation.

• Award in the `Security/ Authentication’ category for their hologram for `Pataka Bidi,
• Award in the `Innovative Technique in Holographic Product/Conversion’ category for the hologram for Harpic Cartons, and
• Award in the `New Application’ category for Kolkata Police `Auto Rickshaw Permits’ hologram, and.
• Commendation in `Promotional” category for `Harpic Cartons’ hologram.

Flex Industries Ltd. (Cyl Divn), won two Awards and one Commendation.

Everest Holovisions Ltd., Navi Mumbai received the Commendation in `Innovative Technique in Origination’ for their `Vastu Poojan Invitation card’

Appreciation Plaque for being the Top and Regular User of the Hologram Roster was presented to the Holostik India Ltd. by the Hologram Registration Service, the agency independently administering the Hologram Roster for HoMAI members

At the HoloPack-HoloPrint Conference/Exhibition held at Vancouver in November 2003, amongst the awards presented by the IHMA - International Hologram Manufacturers Association, Holoflex Ltd., Kolkata had also received the Commendation in the Security/Authentication category for the hologram produced for `Kolkata Police auto rickshaw route licenses’, and the Award in the Label category for the hologram which features on the packaging of `Pataka Bidi hand-rolled bidi’.

At the HoloPack-HoloPrint 2001, Everest Holovisions (and The Paper Products Ltd., Mumbai) had jointly received the award in the Labeling category for Nestle India Ltd.’s Holographic tamper proof shrink-wrap label, and in the Packaging category for Motor Industries Co. Ltd. (MICO)’s Holographic folding carton used to protect product from fakes and to position as a premium product.

These Awards and Commendations both at national and international level show the maturity of the holographic industry in India. They will help generate interest and involvement in high security & innovations to drive the holographic security products to higher levels of quality and equip us to meet the challenges of domestic and international markets with pride. The awards would also help in establishing guidelines and criteria that can be used by the Indian holographic industry in evaluating quality improvement efforts; and to learn how to achieve excellence by making available detailed information adopted by award winning organizations. � The competition will contribute to the health of the holographic industry and bring recognition to the innovators. With ever increasing pirates, the security levels in the holograms are now more complex and incorporating new technology so as to make them safe and, therefore viable for Product and Document Authentication.

We sincerely congratulate all the winners, and urge upon them all to strive hard in arriving at a situation when all their customers in turn will “SAY NO TO A PRODUCT WITHOUT HOLOGRAMS OR ITS HOLOGRAPHIC PACKAGING’’.

The Indian Holographic industry is playing an important role in combating the counterfeiting of popular brand products and the security of sensitive/ precious documents. The Holograms and the Holographic Packaging Film’s application in several States’ Excise Department labels on liquor bottles, various pharma products, automotive spares, FMCGs, recorded music and Software CDs & cassettes, and Govt./ institutional sensitive documents/ certificates/ ID Cards in particular have proved holographic industry’s ongoing indirect contribution to the society and the government revenue in terms of assuring genuineness of the products and consequently the increased sales and higher Govt. Taxes realisation.

HoMAI is a self-regulated national body (covering full spectrum of holographic industry) to encourage fair competition, and adoption of current technologies and standards for high security so as to stay ahead of the pirates. HoMAI Code of Practice is closely monitored for respect for copyrights and that the anti-counterfeiting solutions are provided only to the legal owners of original brand name/ logo/ trademark.

HoMAI Members register their security images/holograms (currently in use or as soon as produced) in the independently administered `Hologram Roster (HR)’� to establish a prima facie evidence of 1st/original creation, and simultaneous application� to the Registrar of Copyrights for added legal security.

HoMAI Members query the HR (in the enquiry� and/or design process itself) to prevent any� similarity or conflict with existing hologram/ image already produced so as to avert any� inadvertent� similarities or copyright� infringement.
Brand� Owners are, therefore, urged to deal with only a HoMAI Member for capabilities matching with their brand value and for an assurance of quality, reliability and integrity.

ELIGIBILITY TO COMPETE FOR THE AWARD

• An organization is eligible to compete for the award, if it satisfies all the following conditions:
• Applicant organization is a HoMAI Full Member.
• Applicant organization has not been found violating the HoMAI Code of Practice.
• The Hologram should have been produced not before 12 months from the date of submission, and should have produced at applicant’s own works & registered in the Hologram Roster.

AWARDS AND CERTIFICATES OF COMMENDATION

• Award Plaque and Certificate for the 1st Winner, Commendation Plaque and the Certificate for the 2nd winner, and Certificate of Merit (subject to judges’ discretion) will be presented in each category.
• Certificate of appreciation for the highest growth over the previous year.
• In the event of non-availability of suitable applicants as per assessment criteria decided by the Experts Committee, any of the above awards/commendation certificates may not be given.

• COUNTERFEITS are fakes clandestinely produced by someone other than the legal owner of the real or original product, name, logo or trademark. They are produced to look exactly or similar and sold like real products. They deceptively resemble the original product name, packaging, graphics/ colour scheme, name/address of the genuine manufacturer in total or near total.
• PASS-OFF products are look-alikes which use similar sounding names or similar spelling, similar looking packaging or color schemes or designs to deliberately mislead and cheat the innocent consumers into believing that they are buying genuine products. There may be slight changes to avoid being categorised as legally counterfeits or not to violate trademark and copyright laws.
• MISBRANDED products are an imitation or a substitute or resemble in name of the genuine product

Government - Industry’s Fight against Counterfeiters

A Recommendation

Considering the havoc played by the counterfeiting, in terms of colossal economic loss to the industry, revenue loss to the Government and grievous injury inflicted on the consumers, a “zero tolerance” approach should be adopted by the Government and the industry to help jointly fight this menace. It is rather essential that certain statutory measures be taken at the earliest to keep the unscrupulous converters at bay before they bring disrepute to the new & widely accepted holographic anti-counterfeiting and security devices.

It is, therefore, suggested that:-

• BIS, DGS&D, DGFT, EXCISE Depts. and other Government agencies should make Holograms a compulsory mark of authentication on all taxable [Sales Tax, Excise/ Customs Duty, ….] products and related important documents/ certificates.
• They should have industry/segment-wise own holograms, and issue them to their respective certified manufacturers. Strict inventory of holograms received & issued should be maintained to tally their final applications — in contrast to the manufacturers having control on BIS stampings at present. The Manufacturers of substandard equipment attempt to fake the BIS Stampings in order to trick consumers into believing that their products are safe.
  Once convinced of the specific hologram-affixed products & value documents being genuine, the end consumer will start preferring hologram-authenticated products only.
• All security and the authenticating holograms — whether produced in India or imported — should be compulsorily registered in the Hologram Industry (HoMAI) authorized “Hologram Roster”
  Copyright Enforcement agencies can query the Hologram Roster to obtain evidence of first/original creation and other copyright issues. Unauthorised designing/ origination/ production of look-alikes of genuine/ original holograms can thus be checked — under the Copyright Law — at the first source itself.
• The Tax Enforcement & Police Authorities - with adequate number of officers at all states/ district level - should proactively police the integrity of products sold and search out offers/sale of fake products and eliminate them so as to cleanse the market.
  They should conduct surveillance visits and link the counterfeits to their exact manufacturing source
• Govt. laboratories should help in conducting quality tests & forensic analysis of the seized products on a priority basis.
• All ministries & govt. departments concerned with the counterfeiting crimes, in cooperation with all major commerce & industries chambers/ associations/ federations relevant to items that are susceptible to counterfeiting should accord a top priority to combat Counterfeiting and support an independently managed ‘Counterfeiting Prevention Bureau’ to:-
  • Study the extent of counterfeiting and its effect on the economy and conduct
  • Operate public education program on national TV channels & Radio stations throughout the country and broadcast the short interviews by
    • providing consumer tips on spotting fake merchandise, how to avoid buying them,
    • alerting them to the counterfeiting problem, mustering their support in gathering intelligence on counterfeits and their perpetrators.
  • Conduct Copyright Protection awareness programs to educate the field officers of Excise/Customs/ Sales Tax and Police authorities and food/ sanitary inspectors so as to help them for a practical prevention and effective enforcement
  • Give special recognition to media coverage for their thorough and insightful articles on counterfeiting in the specific sectors
  • Give support to the nationwide anti-fake campaign and the protection of legal copyrights of enterprises.
  • Support an annual “Product & Document Counterfeiting Protection conference”
  • Institute Annual Awards to recognize outstanding job in Fighting the Counterfeiting - a criminal problem and the human injuries that it often produces by developing/ offering innovative & successful anti-counterfeiting solutions
  • Coordinate with the law/ tax enforcement authorities (Economic Offences Wing, Excise Dept., Police, Court Receiver’s Representative) for surveillance & investigation/ raids of suspected counterfeiting sources and/or the organized criminals on the basis of complaints/information received from the brand owners under the applicable Acts –Trade Mark & Merchandise, Copyright, Drugs & Cosmetics, Food Adulteration, and Consumer Protection Act.

• World Customs Organization regularly uses Hong Kong Customs & Excise Department (Intellectual Property Investigation Bureau) experts to help train other Asian authorities on anti-counterfeiting programs.
• The Global Anti-counterfeiting Group - an association of all the world’s major anti-counterfeiting organizations - exists to raise public awareness of the costs and dangers of fakes worldwide and to co-ordinate IP rights owners support and networking with public authorities and other IP protection organizations.
